We’re often asked this question, and the simple answer is no, and it shouldn’t.
While some sleep products suggest that inclining your baby can ease reflux, leading safety authorities internationally, and in New Zealand strongly advise against it. The NZ Government issued an Indefinite Prohibition Notice 2022, which makes it illegal to import, sell, or supply any inclined infant sleep product with an angle greater than seven degrees, a rule that remains in place indefinitely.
Inclined sleepers have been associated with serious safety risks. An infant’s head may flop forward or roll to the side, potentially obstructing their airway or increasing their chances of suffocation, especially if they move during sleep.
Although there haven’t been reported infant injuries in New Zealand, overseas data shows the risks are real. That’s why the NZ Government took action to ban these products proactively.
When you choose a cot or bassinet, make sure you're choosing a sleep environment that follows safe sleep guidelines: flat, firm, and backed by regulation, not anecdote.
